TripAdvisor was not around when we welcomed our first guests back in 1992. Whereas now travellers find it an invaluable tool. We encourage our guests to post comments and now have over 350 and climbing. Do dip into them. However on Trip Advisor all our 4 very different cottages are mixed up chronologically, though usually named. You may therefore find this page an easier read as the comments below, extracted from each cottage Visitors Book, are grouped under individual properties.
It’s been fascinating flicking back through our Visitors’ Books and picking out the threads that come together to create the perfect holiday for so many of our guests. Rewarding words keep recurring in their entries: amazing, stunning, fantastic, wonderful, lovely, relaxing, peaceful, magical, brilliant, a gem of a cottage, absolutely gorgeous, lots of lovely little surprises….
And what gets the most mentions, strikes the biggest chords? Well, it seems to be the standards of the accommodation, the attention to detail, the cattle and sheep, farm tractors, facilities for the disabled, the very warm welcome, the personal touches, our knack of resolving any problems quickly, the ideal location, the toys, games and teddies, the tourist information on hand, the open fires, the peace and tranquillity and yes, those all-important comfy beds and well-stocked kitchen cupboards and drawers.
Further down are just a few entries for each cottage. To make the selection more interesting I have tried to pick out a range of aspects that appealed …
We were 3 generations. Well, 4 really with the babies. The sun was shining when we arrived and the youngsters made a beeline for Craigengar’s play area. There they were up on the climbing frame, down in the sandpit. We could see them through the huge picture windows and all we could hear were whoops of delight coming from the direction of the big family basket swing. Meantime we adults explored inside. And what space we all had! Great for relaxing together in comfort but perfect, too, when we wanted privacy. There were huge walk-in wardrobes in every bedroom.. Perfect for playing sardines later. One by one as we squashed up together and crammed in, it was so hard not to giggle and give our whereabouts away!
Our toddlers loved the amazing teddy bear Treasure Hunt. Everyone joined in. Upstairs we found a cavernous cupboard in the spacious Gallery area bursting with toys, games, puzzles and books for all ages. Great for rainy days or in the evenings. And our teenagers were delighted with the DVD, TV, PlayStation and the Wii installed up there, loving their own space to lounge and entertain themselves.
Our second day we BBQ ed on the great scud of decking running the length of the house. We giggled our way through sack races, egg and spoon races, throwing quoits and skipping to music. Chalking numbers on the flagstones for hop-scotch became a popular pastime. Playing rounders in the field a stone’s throw from the house, watched by the surrounding sheep was such a novelty and what laughs we had. The less energetic of us could cheer from the decking whilst others of us relaxed inside and watched the action through the floor to ceiling picture windows. Badminton, footballs, quoits, a frisbee, even table tennis outside on a still day, G provided everything.
We raided the boxes of wellie boots for venturing further afield on the farm. We picnicked beside the burn, climbed to the top of Craigengar hill. Watching John the shepherd at work, we envied his lifestyle. And in the wider world of West Lothian, Edinburgh and Glasgow G’s ideas were spot-on for family fun days out and exploring exciting places. Everyone agreed what a fantastic week we had had and dragging the kids away from the resident teddies was quite a task. It was a perfect family break. We loved every minute.
We had a wonderful time at Steading Cottage. Being in a farm was quite a unique location. Being so close to nature and the farm animals was very relaxing and peaceful. Steading is well stocked and spacious.
This is our first visit to Edinburgh. The whole stay was fantastic. We have a 2 year old boy who loved this cottage, the train set and the teddies. Myself and my partner thought the cottage was wonderful and exactly what we wanted. We will definitely want to stay again.
The family really enjoyed their stay at the cottage and visiting the area. Disabled equipment excellent ( very important to us ). Cottage lacks for nothing, it’s all here
What a fantastic cottage, fully equipped and very warm. I have stayed at some locations and holiday cottages but Steading beats them all for homely comfort. Everything possible is provided. Many thanks to G. Loved the fire (memories of a kid lighting the fire with sticks.) It was a brilliant stay.
3 generations of our family stayed for 3 nights which were lovely. A fantastic cottage which is equipped to a brilliant standard. We hope to come back and explore more of the farm. Seeing newborn lambs was a fantastic experience for us all, especially Annie, aged 2 ½ years. Thanks G for going the extra mile
So many things to see and simply not enough time! The kids loved the newborn lambs and the cows. John the shepherd was a great “tour guide” and explained everything about the sheep. Now Sarah wants to become a shepherd, too. Thank you G for all your help and all the information you provided. It really was a treat!
What a lovely stay we have had, G. And made so much better by the suggestions of what to do. We loved everything about the cottage (Hugo particularly loved the bears) and I adored the flowers, thank you. Wild flowers AND lilacs. Thanks for the weather too. How lucky we have been.
The cottage is beautiful and one of the best we have stayed in. “G” could not have been more helpful and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and resolved a TV issue so that we could catch up with the Commonwealth Games in the evenings. Fantastic place. Highly recommended and would love to come back. Thank you.
Peace and quiet other than the occasional cow mooing -- we absolutely loved it! Can’t believe how relaxing a log fire and country setting can be! Great location to get out for the day, eg. Glasgow, Edinburgh or Stirling and then come home to chill for the evening. All the facilities for a home away from home.
The cottage is instantly stunning and you keep noticing little details that you think must have taken so much thought and consideration. The fire was a big hit – just a wee bit of coal and even on the frostiest day the place turned tropical!
We weren’t sure if this would be child-friendly, being open plan, but no need to worry, everything for all ages was catered for
Wow, wow, wow! What an “amaze-on” hoose -- a hard day’s work would melt away in an instant thanks to a blissful welcoming home. Thanks ever so much.” This hard-working guest was part of a travelling theatre group
So well organised with everything to hand. Quality cottage which inspired me for my own building work. Tranquil but didn’t feel isolated. Dad liked the kitchen layout so much he even did the cooking…
Your personal touch is wonderful and together with the incredible accommodation and facilities makes this lodge a place we will look to return to for much needed R & R on a regular basis. (And they have been true to their word)
We all appreciated the lovely toasty floors and were impressed with the fold-down bed – we’ve only seen them in the movies before now.
Really needed to get away from it all and coming here with the superb “home from home”, welcoming G and spectacular Pentland Hills has really hit the spot. Getting all varieties of weather made it even more memorable – rain, crisp sunny days and even a winter wonderland snowfall. Taking a walk in the fields in the snow in brilliant sunshine before breakfast really sets you up for the day ( and G provides the boots ).
It was like stepping into one of the houses featured on Grand Designs and has inspired me to consider underfloor heating and velux windows. The accommodation is so comfortable we enjoyed the rainy day that encouraged us to have some time by the fire. Kitchen facilities excellent as is the drawer full of tourist info. Finally it was lovely meeting the baby lambs that John the shepherd kindly brought for our son to meet (the highlight of his holiday!)
Our second visit to Crosswoodhill but first time at Orlege End. Orlege is definitely a 5 STAR example of modern Scottish style and luxury and G was as warm and welcoming as ever.
Everything was spotlessly clean and found the cottage in terms of comfort and being settled the best self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. Much of this is down to “G” who is both very welcoming and friendly. We arrived in the early hours of the Sunday morning to find the cottage lights on and the beds all made up ready, including the downstairs pull-down bed. There was even a pint of fresh milk and a cream cake in the fridge for us on our arrival.
Considered staging a “sit-in” and refusing to leave but there was the small matter of work. Thank you “G” you are a wonderful host and your personal passion and hospitality has been very much appreciated.
I could live here! That says it all – perfect setting with excellent facilities all of a very high standard. Always know it’s a great holiday when the kids don’t want to go home.
We went away wishing we lived in a house like this, which is surely the highest praise I can give.

We have enjoyed the warm and cosy cottage to the max . We have spent great romantic moments. We vow to come back to be amazed again by the level of relaxation and the generosity of G
The absolute attention to every detail is the best I have ever seen and we are seasoned self-caterers. The “emergency boxes” are a really fabulous touch, eg. power cut, sewing kit, first-aid, and a very informatively and creatively written information pack which covers everything one could think of.
Well, what can I say? FAB holiday at the Wing. “G” thank you so much for making us feel so at home. Crosswoodhill Farm is a great place to just sit and relax or jump in the car and visit many places. The cottage has been great. Meisha and I have enjoyed looking at all your lovely treasures. Great farm to explore for children… so much healthier than watching TV.
We really felt at home. The kids loved strolling around the farm, especially with all those little lambs. The kids are still talking about it every day. We really felt at home. The kids are still talking about it every day. “G” you are a fantastic host, thanks to all your good tips and your warmth (and all those plasters!). It’s such a comforting thing to know there’s always you who could be asked! The Wing is a very special place to stay at, the atmosphere perfectly fits my imagination of a holiday in Scotland. We might even come back again although I tend not to go twice to the same spot; so this is the best compliment you could possibly get.The Wing is a very special place to stay at, the atmosphere perfectly fits my imagination of a holiday in Scotland. Beautiful, relaxing, peaceful and quiet (except when the Monopoly board game was out). Just loved the house and the lovely area.
Appreciated all the small extras, have stayed in self-catering for over 20 years and never had one so well equipped. Brought things with us we didn’t use, which is a first.
Another magical week in our little “home from home”. Kids love it, we love it, once again we will be back.
We really enjoyed our stay in the “Wing”. A real farmhouse feel to it! Euan loved all the toys he found as he explored around the cottage. A real adventure for him. A great location for both east and west of Scotland attractions. All needs catered for and would love to come back.
A warm welcome from “G” who was incredibly helpful. Wish we could have stayed longer and explored the farm a bit more. Phoebe loved all the teddies in her room and all of the books left by G ( Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose being a definite favourite. We now know it off by heart! )
I am from India and seen the apartment system like this for first time in life. I can’t believe that someone can maintain the apartments like this in so good condition. The place is wonderful and people too.
Three generations of our family enjoyed their stay immensely – our welcoming host, a fully equipped house, complete with games and toys for the children. The most gorgeous scenery to calm the soul and enough history to make us want to spend at least a year next time.
Never before have we been greeted by such a hospitable and truly caring host. And some of the things you arranged for us we will never forget.
We have been to Scotland 3 times but I have never seen such a beautiful house as this. I am only 10 years old but I know how a good house look. Any yours would be in the top 100! What I am really saying is that I loved the stay and will tell all my friends.
This house is so lovely. We enjoyed staying here and loved every minute of our holiday.
This was a really good surprise. We nearly thought the house was borrowed from a friend that was on holiday. You really have a talent to make us fell at home. Crosswoodhill is a place we would love to recommend to friends.
G, surely there’s no better method to feel suddenly rescued (how could we know that nurses ( G’s other job ) also know how to make forget bad situations without medicines. She has been our ASDA guide, our travel agent, our transport organiser, our chauffeur, our postmail address and our box of solutions…etc. We couldn’t have chosen anywhere more comfortable, well-equipped and cosy than this accommodation. Scotland and its people… we are delighted.
The house is beautiful and the vistas from those huge windows amazing. Watching the sunrise from the Ash bedroom is wonderful. The visiting sheep are very amusing. We would not want to be without them.
Just such a peaceful and relaxing place to stay. Our 2 year old didn’t want to leave this morning, insisting that this was now her home!
My 50th birthday party. Craigengar was everything and more that the website showed. We spent 4 fabulous nights here and will be returning again for certain. I will remember this place and all that happened here for ever more. Stunning- amazing- fabulous.
This has been one of the most memorable stays / trips ever! Beautiful décor, gorgeous surroundings and breathtaking views. We were very comfortable here and you have done a fantastic job in creating a little piece of heaven on earth! Thank you.
Two words. Exceeded expectations! Quite simply the best self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. Fabulous! Thanks G & Hew.
An absolutely fantastic family get-together staying at Craigengar. It had absolutely everything we needed, all the way down to a nail file and all the way up to Sonos for our entertainment. The bedrooms were so warm, friendly and inviting and the views were absolutely second to none.
This house works brilliantly well. From start to finish -- fantastic. Luxury accommodation which provided everything we needed. From cooking facilities, eating, dancing and drinks. Everyone thought the accommodation was gorgeous, luxurious and we could party away (hen party with a 1940’s theme ) without affecting neighbours.
The shepherd could not have been more helpful bringing lambs to the house for the children ( and some adults ) to see close at hand. G openly invited us to visit the farm and see more lambs and calves. A memorable experience for the children. We could not have asked for more.
Epic venue for an amazing birthday weekend. Games in the back field, long walks to peaks you can see from the kitchen window. The place and the house really brought the group together who came from far and wide for a 30th celebration.

What a wonderful holiday! Craigengar is stunning! Completely faultless and wonderfully equipped. We loved exploring indoors and outdoors and a highlight was being invited to watch the sheep shearing. Thank you G for all of the help and hospitality -- you really made the holiday.
Where to begin! Craigengar is a wonderfully elegant but homely house for family gatherings. The sweeping views, dotted with sheep, only added to the enjoyment. Looking for anything in the kitchen? Open a drawer or cupboard and there it was. We all agree that our time here was memorable, all slept well too as the beds are so comfortable.
Thank you for making this the best holiday ever. I had an amazing time and I will never forget it. It was so exciting that I got up early and went for a walk!
We stayed at the house to celebrate the wedding of our son. The whole experience was first class. We hosted a reception for 60 people to include a ceilidh – all were amazed at both the uniqueness of the building and the versatility of the inside. A truly memorable family occasion spent in glorious surroundings. ( G’s note: this was August and they were able to use the extensive decking. )
Superb retreat home. The quietness is deafening. Absolute luxury in the midst of perfect peace. Heaven.
We so much enjoyed our womenfolk weekend! Lovely place! Best parts—the fireplace, walks, huge table, the swing and all the lovely art.
Since March 2014 I have had the pleasure of staying in each and every one of the Crosswoodhill Farm Holiday cottages ( when there has been availability ) whilst pursuing my occupation for a business nearby. I have been very well looked after over the past year and have found all of the cottages / houses to be very well appointed and well maintained by G - the delightful lady who runs Crosswoodhill properties. I can only say that these properties are of the best standard and I shall be able to recommend them to anyone who is looking for high class self-catering accommodation in the area. Well done, G, and thank you for all your help.
