Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Section 3:    Policies

Can we arrive and leave any time?
On your day of arrival your accommodation will be ready for you any time after 16.00 hrs. Occasionally, if you ask beforehand, we can get it ready by 13.30 hrs. Don't worry if you need to arrive very late at night. Everything will be ready, welcoming and a Home File will answer any immediate questions for you. And for real late-comers (those arriving close to midnight) on request we can usually pre-shop your first day's breakfast for you at your expense.

Is the accommodation child-friendly?
All ages of children have happily stayed at Crosswoodhill and loved meeting the teddies and exploring the toy cupboards and baskets. We can provide (please request in advance) a cot (travel or conventional), a highchair, baby intercom, baby bath. Some of our stair designs do not lend themselves to readily fixing stairgates but we can provide one for the foot of the stairs in The Wing and Steading Cottage. Before booking please check the layout plans to make sure the layouts suit you.

How about dogs …. and cats?
We welcome well-behaved pets (@ £20 per pet per week) as long as they respect our furniture and fittings. We ask that you do not exercise your dogs in the fields where our sheep graze but instead use the local picnic area one mile away to give your dog a taste of freedom! Please enlighten yourselves with our dog-house rules. We do ask you to keep your pets out of the bedrooms.

Can we see your Terms of Let?
You can view them on this link

Are there any extra charges?
Dogs are charged at £20 per pet per week.

Coal and logs (when available). Electricity by meter reading at start and end of stay (no coins). for the Wing, Steading Cottage and Orlege End.   Oil for the Central Heating as used. We find a huge variation in guests' usage of fuel and electricity. For this reason we feel it is fairer to charge fuel and electricity 'at cost', as an extra, at the end of the stay, based on actual recorded measurements of consumption. That way the more economical guests are not subsidising the more extravagant users as so often happens when an 'all-in rental' figure is quoted. All-in rentals tend to build in a fuel allowance based on average to high usage. Our system means you only pay for what you use.The one exception to this practice is Craigengar where the rental is generally an all-inclusive one.

Do you take “any-day” bookings?
Sorry but in advance for various domestic and commercial reasons we usually only take Saturday to Saturday bookings in our smaller properties, though can sometimes make exceptions to this policy. You are welcome to book less than a week but in advance the rental will often be the same as that for a full week. Discounted weekly or part-week bookings are occasionally available very last minute and will be flagged up on the Special  Offers area of both this website and www.fivestarholidaycottage.co.uk

With Craigengar we are a lot more flexible with our bookings, offering Friday to Monday morning weekends, whole Friday to Friday, or Monday to Monday weeks or working weekdays. And occasionally other combinations!

Please tell us how we can book?
For our 3 smaller properties you can check the Availability Calendar buttons you see on various pages.  If your preferred Saturday to Saturday dates are available you can then book through the Availability / Book Online link. For non Sat to Sat dates in any of the cottages and for Craigengar, you can check availability online but you would then need to email us or complete the Availability Enquiry Form or telephone to check prices. If you then decide to go ahead and book, we will send you a link to our alternative booking form.  You will find more information on our booking procedures under the menu choice:  Availability and Booking.

Can we pay by credit or debit card?
Yes, we accept debit and credit card payments in addition to cheque payments.  There is no extra charge for a debit card payment, but credit cards do attract a 2% surcharge.

Can you re-assure us about your green credentials?
We want you to stay somewhere eco-friendly.

We passionately believe in doing all we can to reduce the environmental impact of our business.
Inspected by the Green Tourism Business Scheme ( GTBS) we are thrilled to have been awarded the highest level, GOLD.   Our  Environmental Policy Statement offers you more detail.
And for those interested, each cottage has a “Green File” where we try to highlight the eco-friendly things we are doing and ask for your help.

What’s your policy about guests helping on the farm?
Sadly our insurance does not cover us for guest participation.  However we are very happy for guests to watch all the various farm activities and explore the farm and hills, observing the Country Code.

So it’s not really hard labour like this at Crosswoodhill. The only chore we ask of you is to do your best to leave your cottage clean and tidy.

And finally....

Can you give us 3 good reasons why we should book a property at Crosswoodhill rather than elsewhere?
•    Crosswoodhill Farm Holiday Cottages are annually and individually inspected under the VisitScotland Quality Assurance Scheme. Using a scale of 1-5 Stars, this national scheme provides welcome reassurance about what to expect before you arrive. Its detailed objective assessment embraces cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and standards in the accommodation. All our properties  were last inspected in 2015 and retained their STAR status. More Info

•    We are the only holiday cottage business to have 3 times (in 2001, 2005, 2008) won the Tourism Oscar of Scottish Self-Catering Operator of the Year.  Entering such national prestigious awards incentivises us to regularly "walk every step of the way" through our business to make sure we continue to conjure up and deliver everything we realistically can for our guests' delight.  We were national finalists for the 2012 Thistle Awards and in 2013 were regional finalists for this same award.  In 2014 we were Regional winners. Crosswoodhill was also Highly Commended in the West Lothian Tourism Awards in 2013. In 2015 we have recently learned we are Regional Finalists for the Best Holiday Accommodation  Award. So watch this space!

•    All 4 of our cottages are just so different. We invite you to share with us some of the lovely comments made by past guests on our Feedback (and enjoy some lovely countryside images at the same time.)  And maybe in the future your comment could feature here on this website? Or on Trip Advisor?  If you haven't already done so, please check us out on the Trip Advisor website by typing CROSSWOODHILL into the search area.
